Central Portugal

Central Portugal has an outstanding contrast between ancient and modern, mountains and beaches, forests and flat land.

It's geographically divided into 3 areas: upper, lower, and coastal. You will be spoiled for choice with the variety of options that are available to you. The city of Coimbra is full of ancient towns, villages, spas, Roman ruins, castles, monasteries and convents that are standing which shows it's historical past. Coimbra also has to offer beautiful beaches, pine forests, and wildlife reserves.

There is a late 12th century Romanesque cathedral and a National museum - Museu Nacional Machado de Castro that has a nice collection of paintings and ceramics. Make sure that you visit the beautiful Roman ruins at Conimbriga and make time for a visit to the spa town of Luso, where there are a number of different water therapies available. Why not go for a walk through the Buçaco Forest in the Serra do Buçaco, where there are approximately 700 different tree species.

Coimbra overlooks the river Mondego, the longest river located in Portuguese territory. Its source commences at the Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain in Portugal. It flows through the districts of Viseu, Guarda and Coimbra. The River Mondego also flows near Seia, Gouveia, Guarda, Tábua, Carregal do Sal, Mortágua, and amoungst other towns.

If you prefer the beach, why not visit Figueira da Foz where you are able to surf, swim or just relax in the sun. Figueira da Foz is also very popular due to it's casino, many bars and restaurants.
